Sending Family to Nigeria: A Diaspora Housing Checklist

The Diaspora Family Trip
You're not the one going to Nigeria. Your parents are. Or your siblings. Or your kids. Or your in-laws are coming from London to meet you in Lagos. The "I'm sending family to Nigeria" housing decision has different math than your own diaspora visit.
The complications:
- They may not speak with you in real time during business hours (time zones, work schedules)
- They may not be tech-savvy enough to coordinate housing themselves
- They may not know which Lagos or Enugu neighborhoods are appropriate
- They may have specific needs (elderly parents, children, dietary restrictions, religious observance)
- They may not have local Nigerian bank accounts for payments
- They are your responsibility — if something goes wrong, you wear it
Here's the working checklist.
Step 1: Confirm Their Actual Schedule
Family travel to Nigeria is often loose-itinerary. "Two months" can mean 7 weeks to 11 weeks depending on weddings, deaths, festivals, business. Before you book housing, confirm:
- Arrival date in Nigeria (not just departure from US)
- Planned return date
- Buffer days on either end (most diaspora families add 3-5 days for last-minute changes)
- Cities they'll visit (Lagos only? Lagos + Enugu? Owerri? Abuja?)
If the schedule is genuinely uncertain, book a confirmed 30-night minimum with flexibility for extension. Pay for the certain dates, optionally extend.
Step 2: Pick the City (And Sometimes Cities)
Most diaspora family trips to Nigeria involve one of three patterns:
Lagos base. Lekki Phase 1 or Ikoyi or Victoria Island. Best for business, fintech, urban entertainment, modern shopping. Avoid Lagos Island proper for older relatives — traffic and noise are exhausting.
South-East base. Enugu or Owerri or Aba, depending on village connections. UCS Homes operates in Independence Layout, Enugu — the calmest premium address in the South-East. Best for elderly family visits, traditional events, family reunions.
Multi-city. Start in Lagos for arrival logistics and business, transition to the South-East for family. Plan 1-2 days of travel buffer between cities. UCS Homes can sequence both with consolidated arrangements.
If you're booking for elderly parents (60+), strongly consider Enugu over Lagos for the primary stay. The pace, traffic, and air quality difference is meaningful for older travelers.
Step 3: Verify the Critical Infrastructure
The three things that ruin a diaspora family stay in Nigeria, in order:
1. Power. Without verified inverter + generator backup, your elderly parent will sit in a dark, hot apartment for hours during grid power outages. Verify capacity (kVA), runtime (hours on battery), and generator fuel arrangement (operator provides, or family responsible for buying diesel).
2. Internet. For family members staying in touch with you across the time zone, internet matters. Voice calls, video calls, WhatsApp. Verify primary internet provider + speed AND backup provider. At least 95% target uptime.
3. Security. Premium estate with 24/7 personnel and CCTV. Not a standalone house on an open street, regardless of how "safe" the neighborhood claims to be. Estate-level security with controlled gate access is the standard.
UCS Homes properties in both Lekki and Enugu include all three as standard. This is not a luxury feature for diaspora bookings — it's the minimum for housing your family.
Step 4: Match the Property Size to the Family
Common diaspora family configurations:
Solo elderly parent or aunt. 1-bedroom apartment is fine. Look for ground-floor or elevator access. Verify the property has hot water, a working stove for traditional cooking, and accessible bathroom.
Couple (parents). 1-2 bedroom apartment. Same accessibility considerations. Slightly more storage for the longer typical stays.
Family with kids visiting (Summer break, typically 30-60 nights). 2-3 bedroom with at least one separate living area. Kitchen for actual home cooking — kids on summer trips don't want to eat out for 60 days. Consider proximity to neighborhood parks or compounds with green space.
Multi-generational reunion (60+ nights, larger family). 3-5 bedroom house in a secured estate. Multiple bathrooms. Outdoor space if available. Easier to manage logistics than booking multiple smaller properties.
UCS Homes can help size the property to your family configuration. For larger arrangements, we work with a partner network for 4+ bedroom estate houses in both Lekki and Enugu.
Step 5: Set Up Payment Without Stress
You're probably paying for housing your family is staying in. The payment mechanics:
USD wire transfer from your American bank. Cleanest. Sends in 1-3 business days. Your bank may charge $35-$50 wire fee. The recipient gets clean USD.
Wise (formerly TransferWise). Excellent for smaller transfers. Better exchange rate than your bank. Multi-currency support. Slightly slower for larger amounts.
Remitly, WorldRemit, Sendwave. Diaspora-focused remittance services. Work well for routine family support. Cost-effective for smaller amounts.
Direct card payment in NGN at the operator's rate. Some operators accept international cards for direct NGN charge. Convenient but you take exchange rate risk and pay card processing fees.
For UCS Homes Nigeria bookings, we accept USD wire, Wise, and direct card. Pricing is published in USD with NGN equivalent. You pay once, your family uses the property — you don't need to send weekly money for utility bills or anything else.
Step 6: Pre-Arrival Briefing for Your Family
Two weeks before arrival, send your family:
- Property address with landmarks (e.g., "Off Admiralty Way, behind Nike Art Gallery")
- Property gate code and unit code (if smart locks)
- Contact name and WhatsApp number for the property manager
- Your name on the lease (so the property manager confirms identity)
- Emergency contact for the operator (24/7 if available)
- Nearest pharmacy, hospital, supermarket
- Power and internet briefing ("if power goes out, the inverter starts automatically. If the internet drops, here's the backup network name and password.")
- WhatsApp groups for the local market if relevant (some operators have estate WhatsApp groups for residents)
The goal: your family arrives, walks in, knows what to do. Doesn't need to call you at 3am US time because they can't figure out the keypad.
Step 7: Plan for Their Departure
Easy to forget. Plan:
- How they pay any final fees if applicable (typically none with UCS Homes — all-in monthly)
- How they hand back keys (smart lock codes auto-deactivate, physical keys returned to operator)
- Whether the property does a walk-through at move-out (UCS Homes does a brief one)
- Where they go for the night before flying out (some properties allow late check-out, some don't)
- Transportation to the airport (Murtala Muhammed International for Lagos, Akanu Ibiam for Enugu)
For elderly family members, consider booking a buffer night at an airport hotel for the night before flight. Reduces stress significantly.
Step 8: Document Everything
Just like you would for your own diaspora visit:
- Photograph the property at move-in (have your family do this via WhatsApp, send to you)
- Save the lease PDF
- Save all WhatsApp communications with the operator
- Save payment confirmations
- Send your family the local emergency contacts
If anything goes wrong during the stay, you have documentation. Most stays go smoothly. The 5% that don't become much easier to resolve with documentation.
The UCS Homes Diaspora Family Process
We handle a significant volume of diaspora family bookings every month. The typical process:
- You message us on WhatsApp at +1 (302) 483-7411 or email info@ucshomes.com
- We respond within a few hours during Lagos business hours
- We confirm property availability for your dates and family configuration
- We send a property package: photos, video walkthrough, neighborhood briefing
- You confirm. We send the lease PDF and payment instructions
- You wire payment. We confirm receipt.
- We brief your family 5-7 days before arrival with the full check-in package
- Your family arrives. The property manager greets them at the gate.
- They use the property. You don't hear about it because nothing goes wrong.
- They check out on the planned date. We send you a brief confirmation.
This is what we do. If you're sending family to Nigeria for a stay of 30+ nights, reach out. We can usually accommodate within 5-7 days of inquiry.
